#210 What to give instead of stuff

The American Red Cross has created a clever little video about Fred and the stuff he’s buying and receiving for Christmas. Into a film just one minute long, “2011 Holiday Giving with Fred” packs all the angst, stress, and consumer bloat of the season. It asks the question, “Is it the stuff we want? Is it the stuff we need? Is it the stuff that matters?”

We know the Red Cross is answering no to all those questions, but they don’t stop there. They offer an alternative – for giving what we want, what we need, and what matters: hope, help and compassion.

Wherever our hearts lie, whatever issues concern us most, we have so many opportunities to offer those three gifts. This little ad is a gentle reminder.
