#356 Love lessons from a chimp

Anjana with white tiger cub

Anjana with white tiger cub, from top video below

Humans are not the only animals that can show boundless love. Anjana is a chimpanzee who shows how much we should value and honour our fellow creatures. After watching feline curator China York with young animals, Anjana helped raised tiger and lion cubs and a puma, showering them with love and attention. (Videos below)

The chimp is the star of a book, Anjana: The chimpanzee who learned to raise tigers, lions and pumas.  A whole Web site is devoted to her.

The only life Anjana has known is at the Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (T.I.G.E.R.S.) in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. As of this writing, nothing has been posted about the chimp for two years. Chimps in captivity, even in a place that gives them space and respect, don’t have the kind of normal life they deserve. I hope she is all right.

I’m grateful to Anjana for what she has taught the world about the depth and grace of these creatures whose lives intersect with ours, too often in ways that deprive them of the life they should be allowed to lead. She gives me hope that hearts will be softened by her example and that we will safeguard more spaces for our non-human relatives to be themselves.
